Experience long-term muscle pain relief with this proven treatment.
Anyone can suffer from trigger points, which means anyone can experience the benefits of trigger point injections. These minimally invasive injections are extremely effective for immediately relieving painful knots of muscle, and Better Health Alaska is proud to offer them!
What is a Trigger Point?
A trigger point is a painful “knot” in the muscle. These can happen anywhere there are muscles on the body but are most commonly found in the back, neck, buttocks, or legs. Trigger points can also cause referred pain, which is pain felt in one part of the body that originates somewhere else. This referred pain is usually caused by a trigger point affecting a nearby nerve, causing pain along that nerve.
Trigger points commonly form when a muscle can’t relax. But they can also form due to muscle injury, sleeping in the wrong position, or even maintaining certain body positions over long periods of time. Desk workers, for example, are generally susceptible to trigger points in the upper back, trapezius muscles, and neck.
What’s in a Minimally Invasive Trigger Point Injection?
Minimally invasive trigger point injections involve using very small gauge needles to inject a solution into the affected muscle, providing long-term relief by getting the muscle to relax.
The solutions we use in these minimally invasive injections can vary depending on the needs of the patient. However, the most common injections include the use of Lidocaine or Serapin. Some will include an all-natural anti-inflammatory solution to promote healing in the area.
The medical professionals here at Better Health Alaska will determine the best solution for you after determining the cause and severity of your pain. If they don’t think an injection is necessary, they may suggest trigger point massage, a technique in which our massage therapists are very experienced.
How Long Does a Minimally Invasive Trigger Point Injection Take?
A minimally invasive trigger point injection only takes a few minutes, and it’s done right here in our Juneau clinic. We can even do several minimally invasive trigger point injections in different areas at the same time, if need be. Since the needles are so small, many patients don’t feel anything more than a slight sensation during the injection, and then pain relief quickly thereafter.
It’s considered a very safe therapy, with only minor side effects in a very small percentage of patients.
Benefits of Minimally Invasive Trigger Point Injections
Minimally invasive trigger point injections can provide immediate pain relief to the affected area. For those who suffer from chronic muscle pain, the quick and long-lasting relief of these injections allows them to get back to their life without near-constant pain.
Most often, minimally invasive trigger point injections are used to treat myofascial pain, which can develop because of poor posture, muscle injury, stress, and repetitive motions. However, minimally invasive trigger point injections can also provide relief for fibromyalgia, migraines, and tension headaches.
The benefits of these trigger point injections include:
- Immediate pain relief
- Administered quickly
- Considered safe for most people
- Long-lasting relief (up to two years)
- Very affordable
What the Science Says About Minimally Invasive Trigger Point Injections
At Better Health Alaska, we base our medical treatments on science, high-quality studies, and proven tactics. Our goal is to provide pain relief without the use of narcotics or surgery. And for those with muscle pain, fibromyalgia, and headaches, minimally invasive trigger point injections are extremely effective.
Below are just a few examples of studies that demonstrate the efficacy of these injections.
One study showed that, of 35 patients who received minimally invasive abdominal wall trigger point injections, 34 of them experienced significant pain relief. On average, the pain was reduced from 7.4 down to 2.3, and the relief lasted up to two years, actually showing a further reduction in pain at the two-year mark.
Another study gathered 100 patients who had all undergone failed physical therapy as a tactic to relieve their trigger point pain. While some of the patients (4%) had to have two minimally invasive injections to experience the full benefits, all patients did see significant reductions in pain. No patient experienced serious adverse events or pain at the injection site.
This study found that minimally invasive trigger point injections, along with stretching, were effective in treating trigger points in the trapezius muscles. Each of the study participants had a myofascial trigger point in one trapezius muscle. The authors compared stretching only, ultrasound treatment with stretching, and minimally invasive trigger point injections with stretching. Both the ultrasound treatment and the trigger point injection treatment were found to be better than stretching alone.
This is why we offer all three options at Better Health Alaska. We provide immediate pain relief with minimally invasive trigger point injections, but we are also a physical medicine clinic, offering stretching exercises and physical therapy modalities, including ultrasound therapy.
